I’m Asanka Rathnayake — a creative director, photographer, and filmmaker based in Colombo.
I came into this industry with no experience and no plan. Just the feeling that this was the thing I was supposed to be doing, and enough stubbornness to keep going until someone paid me for it.
The years after that were spent inside other people’s companies, learning how the work actually gets made — how briefs get written, how budgets get decided, and how a good idea gets quietly flattened somewhere on the way to the screen. It also showed me what most of it ends up being. Another piece of content. Something that fills a slot in a calendar and says nothing about the brand that paid for it.
That’s the part I couldn’t leave alone. Every brand has something specific in it — a way of working, a reason it exists, something its customers already feel but can’t quite put into words. It rarely makes it into the film.
Canvas & Co. is what I built to go and find it. I direct, and I build the crew around each job — camera, lights, edit, sound, whoever the film actually needs — people I’ve worked with long enough to know how they think. The idea, the shoot, and the cut stay in the same hands, so nothing gets lost between the people making it.
Working this way changes how the job feels from your side, too. You shouldn’t have to chase an update, stand around on a set running three hours behind, or see the film for the first time when it’s already locked. So you don’t. There’s one number to call when something changes. The set stays calm, because the hard thinking was done weeks earlier. And you see the cut while there’s still time to have an opinion about it.
We’d rather make one film that’s unmistakably yours than ten that could belong to anyone.
